James Franco lands major studio comeback in 'John Rambo' prequel

James Franco is set to return to a major studio production, landing a role in the upcoming action film John Rambo, a prequel to the iconic franchise, according to Variety.

The actor, who has largely remained outside mainstream studio films in recent years following #MeToo-era sexual misconduct allegations, will reportedly play a villain in the project.

The film stars Noah Centineo in the lead role as John Rambo, with David Harbour also joining the cast as Major Trautman.

The project is directed by Jalmari Helander and features an ensemble including Yao, Jason Tobin, Quincy Isaiah, Jefferson White, and Tayme Thapthimthong.

Franco’s casting comes as he was recently spotted at the Cannes Film Festival alongside longtime partner Izabel Pakzad, attending the opening of Club Kid during the annual event.

Speaking to Deadline, Franco confirmed he had recently wrapped work on another unnamed major studio production, marking what he described as his first significant studio role in more than eight years.

He added that the film is expected to be released either by the end of 2026 or sometime in 2027.

While discussing his recent career direction, Franco said he is focused on maintaining a more grounded and positive lifestyle following past controversies that significantly impacted his Hollywood trajectory.

The actor’s return to a high-profile franchise signals a notable step back into mainstream cinema after years away from major studio productions.
