Tom Holland has named Adolescence star Owen Cooper as his preferred successor to the role of Spider-Man, saying the young actor would be "awesome" as Peter Parker as Holland prepares for his fourth and likely final outing in the role.
Speaking to Esquire UK, Holland said of Cooper: "Owen Cooper would be awesome. Obviously, he's super-talented and the talk of the town right now." Cooper rose to widespread acclaim through his leading role in Netflix miniseries Adolescence, a performance that earned him recognition at the BAFTA TV Awards, the Golden Globes, and the Primetime Emmy Awards.
Holland wants to mentor the next Spider-Man
Beyond naming a potential successor, Holland expressed a desire to remain involved in shaping the character's future after his own tenure ends. He acknowledged that securing a producing credit on future films is "pretty tough to get," but said his ambitions are more personal than professional. "In the way that Robert Downey was such a mentor for me in my first three movies, I would love to be that person for whoever is next," he told Esquire UK.
Holland has previously echoed the same sentiment in an interview with Empire, saying: "For whoever's next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter. Whatever that looks like, I don't know. But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset."
Holland's Spider-Man journey
Holland first stepped into the role in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, marking his official entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony Pictures followed the next year with Spider-Man: Homecoming, which featured Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as Iron Man. Holland subsequently appeared in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).
