Sweet Magnolias Season 5 viewership drops 30% as Netflix weighs renewal decision
Netflix has not commissioned a writers room for Season 6, signalling a cautious approach
- Sweet Magnolias Season 5 drew 2.8 million views in its opening week on Netflix
- Viewership dropped 30% compared to Season 3's premiere week figure of 4 million
- Netflix has not yet commissioned a writers room for a potential sixth season
Sweet Magnolias has opened its fifth season on Netflix with 2.8 million views in its debut week — a 30% drop compared to Season 3's opening — prompting the streamer to take a cautious approach to renewal rather than commissioning a writers room ahead of a potential sixth run.
Season 5 viewership and Netflix rankings
The small-town romantic drama, which launched its fifth season on 11 June, ranked fourth on Netflix's Weekly Top 10 for English-language series in its opening week. The 30% decline from Season 3's premiere week figure of 4 million views places it in a pattern seen across many of Netflix's returning series, though its drop is considerably more modest than several high-profile examples.
Wider pattern of double-digit declines
A number of Netflix series have returned recently with steep opening-week drops compared to their previous seasons. These include The Four Seasons (-63%), A Good Girl's Guide to Murder (-76%), Beef (-58%), A Man on the Inside (down more than 66%), Running Point (-43%), The Night Agent (-40%), and The Witcher (-51%). Romantic dramas, however, have fared considerably better as a genre. Bridgerton Season 4 dropped by 12%, Virgin River's seventh season was also down 12%, and Nobody Wants This fell 17% between its first and second seasons.
Sweet Magnolias' own trajectory
Within its own history, Sweet Magnolias had shown resilience, with Season 4 down just 13% from Season 3 in its opening week. Season 2 launched on a Friday rather than the Thursday start used for Seasons 3 through 5, which makes direct comparisons between those cycles less reliable.
Netflix's renewal track record
Netflix has renewed several series this year that posted steeper declines than Sweet Magnolias, including The Four Seasons, A Man on the Inside, Running Point, and The Night Agent. That said, the streamer designated The Night Agent's upcoming fourth season as its last, and The Witcher is also set to conclude with its next instalment. A similar approach — a sixth and final season — remains a possibility for Sweet Magnolias.
Showrunner on the Season 5 finale
Season 5 ended with several cliffhangers but without major dramatic twists, closing once again with the titular Sweet Magnolias sharing a margarita toast. Deadline asked Series Developer and Showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson whether the finale was deliberately crafted to function as a potential series ending should Season 6 not be commissioned.
"I actually think some of our cliffhangers are pretty big but, beyond the ritual of ending with a toast, we always strive to give our audience a balance between the tension of the open questions: Who's leaving, Who's coming back, Who's staying together, all of those, with emotional satisfaction," she said.
She added: "I think maybe in some cases, the emotional satisfaction and the joy is greater than the open questions, but the open questions are certainly there, and we certainly have big thoughts about, if we are lucky enough to get another season, the stories that we will tell."
