Lizzo has spoken candidly about her fluctuating body weight, offering rare insight into both her weight loss and recent weight gain.
The 38-year-old singer deflected specific questions about the reasons behind her significant weight loss in an interview with The Guardian. "There are a lot of reasons. People always want to make it one single headline, one single thing. A lot of things can be true at once," she said.
Joint pain and personal control drove change
The About Damn Time singer explained that physical discomfort played a role in her decision to change her lifestyle. "I was in a place where my physical weight was causing joint pain and aches. I also got to the point where I came off the internet, and all I had was the studio and my thoughts, so I poured myself into the things I could control. My body, my lifestyle, my routines and habits... and this is who I am today," she said.
Weight continues to fluctuate
Lizzo has been losing weight since 2024 and has denied using GLP-1 medications. However, she revealed that her weight has continued to fluctuate over the past year. "I've gained 20 pounds (9kg) since last year, so everyone can ask me about weight gain, too, if they'd like," she said.
Singer addresses pressure on women
Lizzo also spoke about the broader pressures placed on women, particularly those in the public eye, regarding body image. "There's a system of oppression that is constantly putting pressure on, especially women and especially women in the spotlight. That system is unrelenting and it is determined to make you feel s**t about yourself," she said. She continued: "It won't stop until you've bought every product and you've bought into every lie and turned it in on yourself. That system is working at an all-time high right now."
