Brian Austin Green admits divorce changed how he approaches love

Brian Austin Green says the end of his marriage to Megan Fox transformed his outlook on relationships, revealing that therapy helped him prioritise friendship and emotional connection over physical attraction.

Brian Austin Green says therapy changed his perspective

Speaking on the I Do, Part 2 podcast, the Beverly Hills, 90210 actor reflected on the lessons he learned following his divorce from Fox after nearly 15 years together.

Green said he realised many of his past relationships had started with physical attraction before an emotional bond had developed. Following the divorce, he sought therapy to better understand his own role in relationships and avoid repeating old patterns.

He said the experience led him to believe that genuine friendship should form the foundation of a lasting relationship.

Friendship became the foundation of his relationship with Sharna Burgess

Green said his relationship with fiancée Sharna Burgess developed naturally after they spent hours talking and getting to know each other before becoming romantically involved.

According to the actor, building a friendship first created a stronger sense of trust and transparency, making it easier to communicate openly about both their strengths and flaws from the beginning.

He added that putting everything "on the table" early in the relationship helped them recognise they were well suited to one another.

Green says attraction alone cannot sustain a relationship

The actor also argued that relationships based mainly on physical attraction often struggle over time.

Green said couples who rely only on chemistry may eventually discover they are incompatible once the initial attraction fades. By contrast, he believes relationships built on friendship, honesty and openness are more likely to endure.

Green and Fox married in 2010 after meeting on the set of Hope & Faith in 2004. They share three sons and finalised their divorce in 2020. Both have since moved on, with Green now engaged to Burgess, with whom he shares a son, while Fox recently welcomed a daughter with MGK.
