Ryan Gosling officially cast as Marvel’s next 'Ghost Rider'
The actor was revealed as Marvel’s new Ghost Rider during the studio’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con
Ryan Gosling is officially entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the next actor to take on the role of Ghost Rider.
The Oscar-nominated actor, 45, was revealed as the new Ghost Rider during Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 25.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that Gosling will star as the supernatural superhero in an upcoming standalone film.
“As you know, this is a character I’ve wanted to play for a long time,” Gosling told the excited Comic-Con audience while discussing the role.
The new project will mark Gosling’s first superhero or comic book movie and his first major role within the Marvel universe.
Before Gosling’s casting, Nicolas Cage portrayed Ghost Rider in two films, first appearing as motorcycle stuntman Johnny Blaze in 2007’s Ghost Rider.
The movie also starred Gosling’s longtime partner Eva Mendes as Roxanne Simpson.
Cage returned for the 2011 sequel Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, though Mendes did not reprise her role.
The upcoming Marvel film will be directed by Shawn Levy, who previously worked with Gosling on the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter and directed the 2024 Marvel hit Deadpool & Wolverine.
Levy joined Gosling and Feige onstage at Comic-Con, where he reflected on the excitement surrounding the announcement.
“I’m having the greatest flashback vibes here, because I was here two years ago when we showed Deadpool & Wolverine,” Levy said. “I’ll never forget that night, because I was introduced to the greatest fans.”
Speaking about working with Gosling, Levy praised the actor and recalled how their conversations about Ghost Rider led to the new project.
“Gosling is the absolute s---. I say that with tremendous respect,” Levy said. “We spent a lot of time last year making Starfighter, and the opportunity as Ryan started talking about this character, I was like, ‘Bro, let’s ride.’”
Levy teased that fans could see the movie arrive in 2028, though Marvel has not announced an official release date.
