Lenny Kravitz opened up about the enduring connection he shared with his ex-wife, the beloved actress Lisa Bonet.

While conversing with PEOPLE for a weekly cover story the 59-year-old rockstar, shared how their love survived their split.

"I am what I am because of our experience, because of everything that I was, everything that she was and everything that came together," said Kravitz.

Reflecting on Bonnet's remarks about his hair, “I had moved in with Lisa, brought my instruments and things, but somehow forgot my comb. I never planned on dreading, but after a few months my hair was matting,” adding, “Lisa was like, ‘Keep it. It looks good.’ ”

“I wasn’t thinking, ‘Oh, this is sexy.’ I was just living and doing,” Kravitz shared.

He continued, “I was married to the most beautiful woman on the planet, incredible inside and out, and I wasn’t paying attention to that. I was paying attention to the music."

The Fly Away singer shared, "We were quite the family," adding, "We had our own groove, expression, fashion. It was a beautiful time. The world Zoë’s mom and I were creating, our family, it was about peace, love and spirit.”

Both he and Bonet are well-versed in the art of improvement. Following the dissolution of their marriage, during which he admitted to emotional struggles and the fact that they had married at a young age, the pair actively worked to ensure the resilience of their connection.

He said, “The love doesn’t leave you, but it has to find a new way to funnel itself into a new life,”adding, “We consciously wanted to do that. It took time, believe me, but she is a part of my life that will never leave my heart, my soul or my spirit. I am what I am because of our experience.”

For the unversed Bonet was married to singer-songwriter Lenny Kravitz in 1993 and parted ways in 1998, with whom she had one child, Zoë, who is also an actress.
