Lonely Island members reveal reason why they secretly wished to lose at Grammys
Andy Samberg opens up about Grammy nomination
The Lonely Island trio revealed why they didn’t want to win a Grammy after finding out they were nominated for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.
The comedy trio that consists of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorme Taccone were nominated for their song I'm on a Boat alongside rap legends.
In a candid conversation with Seth Meyers on May 27, episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, the 47-year-old writer, musician and comedian playfully expressed, "I don't know if anyone's ever gone to the Grammys hoping to lose more."
"We were like, if we win, we can't get on stage. We were only confident enough to go cause we were that sure that we were going to lose."
To which the 51-year-old comedian and television host humorously responded with, "You're right, that might have been a weird tipping point that you wouldn't have recovered from."
With T-Pain performing alongside the trio dressed in tuxedos, they rapped about sipping champagne, chilling with their peers, and rocking their iconic flip flops.
Up against legendary hits such as Beyoncé and Kanye West's Ego, West, Keri Hilson, and Ne-Yo's Knock You Down and T.I. and Justin Timberlake's Dead and Gone.
The Lonely Island felt like the underdogs being involved with such big names.
Ultimately the award was presented to Jay-Z, and Rihanna for Run This Town.
The Brooklyn Nine-Nine alum, Andy, went on to joke, "We were a little salty about not being nominated for comedy album."
"I believe we had had the biggest selling comedy album of the year and, as everyone knows, if you sell a lot, that means it's high quality."
