Meta-owned Threads likely to surpass top competitor X: Data reveals

New data from market intelligence provider Similarweb has indicated that Instagram Threads is rapidly approaching X (formerly Twitter) in terms of daily active mobile app users.

As of June 2025, Instagram’s Threads' mobile app for iOS and Android recorded 115.1 million daily active users, showcasing a significant 127.8% year-over-year growth.

In contrast, X reached 132 million daily active users, but its year-over-year growth declined by 15.2%.

Meanwhile, the recently introduced social network Bluesky demonstrated substantial growth, increasing by 372.5% year-over-year as of June.

However, its worldwide daily active users remain relatively small, with an estimated 4.1 million daily active users.

As the current competition for daily users is primarily concentrated between Threads and X, the new mobile data strongly suggests that Threads is emerging as a significant competitor to X across iOS and Android, potentially capturing a larger share of advertising revenue, which currently stands as Meta's sole monetisation strategy for Threads.

However, this close competition is confined to mobile devices. 

X maintains a considerable advantage on the web, with Similarweb reporting 145.8 million average daily web visits worldwide for X in June 2025, significantly higher than Threads' 6.9 million.
