Family relationship are not always perfect and sometimes it becomes difficult to set aside differences.

Even celebrities, despite all the fame, wealth, and red-carpet moments, often carry complicated past with their parents.

Here are some of the top celebrities who have opened up about their strained relationship with their parents and how they healed from them over the years.

Justin Bieber:

Justin Bieber has always been open about his close bond with his mom. However the fame had brought a distance between the iconic singer and his mother.

"My connection with my mom was pretty non-existing," Bieber revealed to Billboard. "I was distant because I was ashamed. I never wanted my mom to be disappointed in me and I knew she was. We spent some time not talking, so it takes time to rebuild that trust … it’s hard, but getting better. She’s an amazing woman and I love her.”

Later, the two worked through their differences and repaired their bond.

Demi Lovato:

Demi Lovato’s relationship with her late father Patrick was complicated, shaped by both pain and attempts at love.

The iconic singer shared in a video series, "I was very conflicted when he passed because he was abusive.”

"He was mean, but he wanted to be a good person, and he wanted to have his family. When my mom married my stepdad, he still had this huge heart where he would say, 'I'm so glad Eddie's taking care of you and doing the job that I wish I could do.'"

In 2020 Lavato shared in a Vogue essay  Demi that she found healing by expressing gratitude. "I wrote a gratitude letter to him, thanking him for all the things that I got from him."

It was this beautiful release of all the resentments I had toward him. I realized, for the first time, that I wasn't going to have daddy issues for the rest of my life."

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson:

Dwayne Johnson has often spoken about the complexity of his relationship with his father, Rocky Johnson. In a 2023 Father’s Day post, he shared how unresolved conflict still weighs on him.

"My old man died suddenly a few years ago. Unfortunately, we got in a fight about a month earlier and I never reconciled with him or even had a chance to say goodbye," he admitted, adding, "So for me, every Father’s Day has become very tricky because there’s a lot pain."

The Black Adam star used his experience to send a heartfelt reminder, "To my guys out there, if your old man is still around — consider it a blessing. Even if you and your dad are working thru some complicated s***. I’ve been there and I understand. But do your best to reconcile and get that drama behind you and get right with your dad. It’s important. Because the alternative is regret and I don’t want that for you."

Angelina Jolie:

The tension between Angelina Jolie and her family also made headlines. The Oscar-winning actress was estranged from her father, Jon Voight, for seven years before they reconciled in 2010.

Despite their ups and downs, Voight told Us Weekly, "We love each other and that's the most important thing."

Drew Barrymore:

Drew Barrymore has always been vocal about her unusual upbringing. During her teen age, she became an liberated minor, and her relationship with her late father, John Barrymore, remained complicated.

"I think I would have liked to have a dad who didn’t look so out there. Or who stayed. Or was capable of anything really," Drew wrote on Instagram in 2020.

"But his wildness runs through me. His gifts are here. His demons to overcome are mine to break! I love him not for who I wanted him to be, but for who he was."

She continued, "I don’t have a picture of a dad today to show how great everything was. I have a picture to show what it was. And that is my story. And that is perfect in itself. My dad gave me the gift of life! A wicked sense of humor! And that wildness that I truly do cherish."
