A former street by the name of Prince Andrew Way will no longer be named after its subject, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, following an amicable round of voting by local councillors.

According to GB News, local representatives “have voted unanimously to change the name of a road called Prince Andrew Way in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland.”

The state’s Alliance Party and the British Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) first initiated the matter a few days ago, with the DUP members declaring that “the continued association of our town with Prince Andrew, through the naming of Prince Andrew Way, is no longer appropriate.”

“Carrickfergus has a proud history and strong community values. It is vital that the names of our streets reflect those values and do not commemorate individuals whose conduct has brought the royal family into disrepute,” their message, shared via social media, further said.

Following Andrew’s latest removal, Councillor Lauren Gray has said, “While Queen Elizabeth II would be a fitting tribute to the late monarch, we would ask officers to bring back a report that includes a mechanism for a public consultation to ensure the people of Carrickfergus have their say.”

The council member further noted that the Prince Andrew Way was first recommended for removal back in 2019, with her fellow Councillor, Anna Henry, describing the latest change as “sad but necessary”.
