Netflix renews Paramount's 'Little House on the Prairie' after losing Warner Bros. to competitor

Netflix is signaling confidence following last Friday’s surprising reversal by Warner Bros. Discovery.

The company led by David Zaslav decided to walk away from its merger agreement with Netflix, choosing instead to partner with Paramount, which had offered a more attractive bid.

This morning, Netflix shared news of an early Season 2 renewal for Little House on the Prairie, their eagerly anticipated reboot of the iconic TV series inspired by Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved books.

This project comes from Paramount's CBS Studios, marking their first public collaboration since Paramount penned a $2.8 billion check to Netflix to cover the WBD termination fee last Friday.

Issuing early renewals is a strategy Netflix, along with other streaming platforms, often uses to shorten the interval between seasons for promising shows.

However, announcing the pickup this week is intriguing, especially since Little House On the Prairie isn’t set to premiere until July 9, over four months away.

While the timing raised eyebrows, the renewal itself was expected. Netflix executives have been praising the series in informal discussions for months, particularly after the completion of Season 1 filming last fall.

A promising omen lies in the pre-greenlight writers' room, which opened at the close of 2025.

This was around the period Netflix emerged victorious in the initial phase of the WBD bidding against Paramount, according to reports.

The renewal was confirmed after Netflix executives had the opportunity to view the first season.

Sources described it as "fantastic" and "unique" in its interpretation of the original content.

Additionally, they heard the Season 2 pitch from the creative team led by showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine.

Despite the recent public disagreements between Netflix and Paramount, including accusations of "disinformation," normal operations continued for Little House On the Prairie.

The series received an official green light for Season 2 following a positive internal reception for Season 1.
