Uma Thurman reveals 'six-week' coincidence that kept her out of Hollywood
How motherhood reshaped Uma Thurman's career and her 'choice to be happy'
The acclaimed actress Uma Thurman has provided a candid reflection on her lifelong decision to remain in New York rather than relocate to the heart of the film industry in Los Angeles.
Speaking to InStyle, the Kill Bill star revealed that although she once secured a California apartment during a period of frequent work, an unexpected life event redirected her path.
“I even got an apartment there at one point because I was working there really frequently, and as soon as I signed the lease, I got pregnant with my daughter within, like, six weeks,” she explained.
Choosing to prioritise her family environment over professional proximity, Thurman acknowledged that staying on the East Coast created a distinct barrier between her and her peers.
“I never did time in Los Angeles, and because of that, I kind of never integrated into the community of my own profession,” she noted. Instead of Hollywood networking, she found a sense of belonging among local parents.
“I had more of a community with the other mothers at pickup on 16th Street and Rutherford Place, and that’s OK. But I wish I’d had that chapter. I think I really would have liked it,” she added.
The mother of three, who shares children with former husband Ethan Hawke and a daughter with Arpad Busson, remains firm in her life choices.
Despite missing out on the Californian industry circuit, she maintains a positive outlook on her journey. “I think the choice to be happy should be made, regardless of any conditions,” she concluded.
