New video captures deadly crash between Air Canada flight and firetruck at LaGuardia

Newly surfaced security camera footage has captured the tragic moment an Air Canada Express flight collided with a firetruck at LaGuardia Airport.

The video, circulating online after being obtained by The Wall Street Journal, shows the Jazz Aviation aircraft striking an airport rescue vehicle on Runway 4.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening as the truck was responding to a separate emergency. A Port Authority spokesperson confirmed the deaths of the pilot and co-pilot, stating: “The pilot and co-pilot of the Jazz Aviation flight were pronounced deceased.”

Of the 76 people on board the Montreal-to-New York flight, 39 passengers were taken to hospital, alongside two fire officers.

In distressing air traffic control recordings, a controller is heard shouting, “Stop, stop, stop, stop. Truck 1, stop, stop, stop,” before later admitting, “I messed up.”

His colleague offered support, saying: “Nah, man, you did the best you could.” Port Authority Executive Director Kathryn Garcia noted that the investigation would examine vehicle speeds and staffing levels.

“Emergency response protocols were immediately activated,” the airport confirmed on X, noting the facility remained closed to facilitate a thorough investigation.

Federal authorities, including the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration, have now taken the lead in the inquiry.

These investigators will focus on the technical failures and human factors that led to the crash. Following the recovery of the flight recorders, officials are expected to release a preliminary report detailing the exact sequence of events that resulted in this devastating loss of life.
