Hundreds of mourners gathered at Kenwood Middle School on Saturday for an emotional vigil following a tragic school bus collision.

The community came together to honour two young victims, identified by local outlets and GoFundMe pages as Zoe Davis and Arianna Pearson.

The eighth-grade students were travelling to a weekend competition on Friday, when their bus collided with a dump truck and a passenger vehicle.

The incident left more than 20 others injured, with several children airlifted to specialist hospitals in Nashville for emergency treatment.

During the candlelight ceremony, heartbroken classmates shared their distress over the sudden loss. One student, M'kayiea Smith, told WZTV Nashville: "I just don't understand how I'm going to come in on Monday and know that they're [not] going to be there."

The Tennessee Highway Patrol has described the ongoing investigation as a "lengthy process" involving local and federal partners.

Director of Schools Dr Jean Luna-Vedder praised the power of community amid the unimaginable tragedy, asking the public to "pray and wrap their arms around these students, employees, their families, and the entire Kenwood community."

The school district has confirmed that shattered hearts remain with those injured, including five adults who were on the bus during the accident. Support services are being provided to students as they return to classes.

Moving forward, the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System plans to facilitate long-term assistance for the affected families as the Tennessee Highway Patrol continues to gather facts regarding the crash.
