Kylie Minogue has executed a sophisticated April Fools’ Day prank by convincing her global fanbase that she had released a surprise new project.

On Wednesday, the pop icon unveiled a complete mock EP titled Hot Air Balloon for Two, featuring a detailed tracklist and professional cover art.

The creative stunt was inspired by a 2019 appearance of Will Ferrell on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where the actor—in character as Ron Burgundy—humorously listed several non-existent Kylie songs.

Minogue and her team "planted the seed" for the prank by sharing a series of mysterious, blurry images on Instagram before "dropping" the supposed EP at midnight.

Excited fans who rushed to stream the new release were instead redirected to the music video for her 1992 classic, "What Kind of Fool (Heard All That Before)." Following the revelation, Minogue shared a video explaining the origins of the joke and thanking Ferrell and Fallon for the inspiration.

"Okay okay Lovers I owe you one for that April Fools Fun," she wrote on her official @kylieminogue account. The singer expressed genuine amusement at how quickly her followers mobilised to support the fake release, noting: "BUT WAIT … why were you all actually READY for it?! The energy??? The commitment??? I’m impressed."

While Hot Air Balloon for Two remains a fictional endeavour, Minogue continues to enjoy the success of her 2024 chart-topping album, Tension II.

She is currently scheduled to perform a series of high-profile summer festivals throughout Europe and Australia later this year.

Despite the disappointment of some fans, the lighthearted prank has been widely hailed as one of the most successful celebrity interactions of the 2026 holiday.
