Former spouses Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey reportedly navigated an incredibly awkward encounter on 29 March while travelling on the same flight from Los Angeles to Kauai, Hawaii.

According to reports from TMZ, the pair found themselves seated in the same first-class cabin, leading to visible discomfort.

Witnesses noted that Lachey appeared to go "bright red" upon noticing his former wife, while Simpson reportedly switched seats with a member of her travelling party to increase the distance between them.

Adding to the complex dynamic, Lachey’s wife, Vanessa, was present in first class, while Simpson’s estranged husband, Eric Johnson, was reportedly travelling in the coach section of the same aircraft.

While some sources claimed the pair went out of their way to avoid interaction, conflicting reports from Us Weekly suggest a more civil exchange occurred.

An insider told the publication, “They actually did say hello, and it was a nice, cordial conversation.” This high-altitude run-in marks a rare public intersection for the duo, who have maintained separate lives since their high-profile divorce.

The encounter comes during a transitional period for Simpson, who separated from Eric Johnson in January 2025 after ten years of marriage.

The pair famously documented the early years of their relationship on the MTV reality series Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, which aired between 2003 and 2005. They were married for nearly four years before finalising their divorce in June 2006.

Lachey has since spoken candidly about the emotional "scars" left by the dissolution of his first marriage, while crediting his subsequent union with Vanessa for providing the family life he had always desired.
