A spokesperson for the Orem Police Department told the News-Tribune on Friday, 10 April 2026, that detectives are still clarifying whether the suspect, identified as Guanlao, is the biological father or the stepfather of the victims. =

No motive for the violence has been released, leaving the community and the victims' family searching for answers.

The tragedy has left a mother grieving the loss of one daughter, identified by family members as Maningat, whilst keeping vigil beside another who remains in critical condition.

In a statement shared via a community fundraiser, loved ones described the family’s immense burden, noting that the mother is attempting to "stay strong for her two other daughters who are carrying fear, confusion and heartbreak that no words can fully explain."

Friends and relatives remembered Maningat as a "genuinely kind" person who never held grudges and possessed a unique ability to make those around her feel "heard and special."

The shooting occurred earlier this week, sending shockwaves through the Orem campus community, where the sisters were well-known.

Police have not yet confirmed if any previous domestic disturbances were reported at the family residence. As the investigation continues, local advocates have pointed to the incident as a stark reminder of the complexities of domestic violence cases.

"She was the type of person who was always so accepting," a family statement read, highlighting the profound loss felt by those who knew the victim.
