Karol G makes history as first Latina woman to headline Coachella festival
Colombian artist Karol G dedicated her performance to resilient and hardworking communities
Colombian singer Karol G delivered a historic and emotionally charged performance on Sunday, 12 April, as she became the first Latina woman to headline the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
During her closing set in Indio, California, the 35-year-old star used her platform to speak directly to the Latino community, particularly those facing hardships.
"It's not just about me. It's about my Latino community, my people," she told the sold-out crowd. "For my Latinos that have been struggling in this country, we stand for them. Don't feel fear."
The Grammy winner emphasised the importance of cultural roots, urging her fans to remain proud of their heritage regardless of their current circumstances.
Her comments followed recent remarks to Playboy magazine, where she discussed the complexities of her "ICE out" motif and the boundaries she must navigate as a public figure.
"Through my music and this show, I want to continue building love and understanding for our community — a resilient, hardworking community that has contributed so much," she explained, adding that it becomes difficult to process when political actions cross the line of "basic human dignity."
The performance took place against a backdrop of heightened political tension, following reports of fifteen deaths in US Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centres earlier this year.
Karol G maintained that her objective was to ensure everyone felt welcome to experience her culture and music. The singer continues to enjoy a record-breaking career, having recently concluded a highly successful stadium tour.
She remains a central figure in the global expansion of reggaeton and Latin pop music.
