  • Channel 4’s digital initiative A Comedy Thing has reached 6.5 million views on YouTube.
  • The platform has recorded 165,000 hours of watch time with a mostly young audience.
  • Upcoming programming will feature emerging comedians like Eric Rushton and Jin Hao.

Channel 4 has announced that its digital initiative, A Comedy Thing, has achieved significant commercial success, delivering 6.5 million views on YouTube to date.

The platform, which publishes weekly long-form programming featuring emerging comedians, has clocked up 165,000 hours of watch time.

Crucially for the broadcaster, the data reveals that the audience is predominantly under the age of 35, a demographic highly sought after by traditional television networks moving into the digital space.

The second year of the channel will introduce new talent including Eric Rushton, winner of the 2023 Sean Lock Award, alongside Jin Hao and Kyla Cobbler.

Established formats like The Lying Game are set to return, joined by new additions such as Pun Battle. Commenting on the strategy, Charlie Hyland, Channel 4’s Digital Commissioning Editor for Comedy, said: "We wanted to build a proper home for new comedy — somewhere brilliant young stand-ups can try things, sharpen their voice and find an audience. What’s been exciting is seeing that grow into a real community around them."

Hyland further emphasised the cultural importance of the project, stating, "The UK and Ireland have always been at the heart of this kind of comedy, and this is about creating the space to keep doing that."

Managed by Strong Watch Studios, the project sits within a wider domestic comedy boom. Recent successes elsewhere include Prime Video’s Last One Laughing and the British adaptation of Saturday Night Live, which has featured high-profile hosts such as Nicola Coughlan.
