A growing body of research suggests that people with Lactose Intolerance may not need to completely eliminate dairy, thanks to the potential benefits of Kefir.

According to Dr. Karan Rajan, regularly consuming kefir—a probiotic-rich fermented drink—could help reduce bloating and improve the body’s ability to process lactose over time.

In a recent social media post, he explained that lactose intolerance often develops as levels of lactase, the enzyme needed to digest lactose, decline with age.

Undigested lactose then reaches the colon, where it is fermented by bacteria, causing gas and discomfort.

Kefir, however, contains beneficial bacteria that can assist in breaking down lactose more efficiently.

Dr. Rajan noted that consistent consumption may help “train” the gut microbiome, increasing populations of lactose-fermenting bacteria such as Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus.

Over a period of two to four weeks, this adaptation could lead to reduced gas production and improved tolerance.

Beyond lactose digestion, kefir may also support broader gut health. Its diverse microbial content can boost gut microbiome diversity and produce short-chain fatty acids, which are linked to improved gut barrier function and reduced inflammation.

Some studies, he added, suggest that regular kefir intake may even help alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, including bloating.

For those interested in trying kefir, Dr. Rajan recommends starting with small amounts and gradually increasing intake, allowing the gut time to adjust.
