Charlize Theron opened up about the lasting impact of her turbulent childhood, revealing how growing up around alcoholism and domestic conflict shaped her early years and personal resilience.

In a candid interview with The New York Times, the Oscar-winning actress, 50, spoke about her upbringing in South Africa, where her father, Charles Theron, struggled with alcohol abuse, creating a volatile home environment.

Theron recalled being deeply affected by her father’s behavior, describing how frequent exposure to intoxication left her fearful at a young age.

“I have memories from when I was really young, seeing really drunk people, and it scared me,” she shared, noting that such experiences became a regular part of her childhood.

The actress also detailed the tension between her parents, explaining that arguments and prolonged periods of silence between her father and mother, Gerda Jacoba Aletta Maritz, contributed to a difficult household emotionally.

“There would be a big fight, and then they wouldn’t talk for three weeks,” Theron said, adding that the silence was particularly isolating as an only child.

In 1991, when Theron was 15, her mother fatally shot her father in what was later ruled self-defense — a pivotal moment that marked a turning point in her life.

While clarifying that her father was not physically abusive toward her, Theron described his behavior as intimidating, citing instances of drunk driving and verbal aggression that became normalized over time.

“There was a lot of verbal abuse, a lot of threatening language,” she said.

Theron credited her mother with taking steps to protect her, including sending her to boarding school and instilling a strong sense of independence.

Reflecting on her decision to leave South Africa at 16 to pursue a modeling career in Europe, the actress said her upbringing ultimately equipped her with the survival skills and determination she needed.

“I knew how to take care of myself,” she said, adding that her early life experiences fueled her drive to succeed and build a future from her past.

Now a mother to daughters Jackson and August, Theron acknowledged how those formative years continue to shape her perspective, underscoring both the challenges she faced and the resilience she developed.
