Amanda Knox questions conviction of Lucy Letby after podcast review
Amanda Knox has raised fresh doubts about conviction of British nurse Lucy Letby
Amanda Knox has raised fresh doubts about the conviction of British nurse Lucy Letby, saying her review of the case for a podcast led her to question whether the deaths of several infants were intentionally caused.
Letby, a former neonatal nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital, was convicted in 2023 of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill six others.
She was sentenced to multiple whole-life terms and has consistently denied the allegations. Her appeals have so far been unsuccessful.
Speaking during a television interview, Knox said she approached the case without assuming Letby’s innocence but became increasingly concerned as she examined the evidence.
“I became disturbed by some of the things we uncovered,” she said, referring to findings discussed in her podcast project.
Knox, whose own conviction in the 2007 murder of Meredith Kercher was later overturned, said her interest in the case was partly driven by her advocacy work around wrongful convictions.
She noted parallels in what she described as the intense public scrutiny faced by Letby, particularly in the absence of a clear motive or prior history of violence.
She also questioned how certain pieces of evidence — including handwritten notes presented during the trial — were interpreted by prosecutors as incriminating.
As part of her research, Knox reviewed analysis from an international panel of medical experts reportedly led by Canadian neonatologist Shoo Lee, which was assembled by Letby’s legal team.
Despite raising concerns, Knox emphasised the importance of respecting the victims and ensuring accountability based on evidence.
The case continues to attract attention as debates over the conviction persist.
