Yellowstone star Luke Grimes said one of the strangest reactions he gets from fans is their disappointment upon learning he isn’t actually a working cowboy in real life.

The 42-year-old actor, who played Kayce Dutton on the hit Western drama from 2018 to 2024, opened up about fan reactions during a recent interview with Toronto radio station CHUM 104.5, saying some viewers became so immersed in the show’s world that they expected authenticity off-screen.

“A lot of times you’ll get the, ‘You’re not a real cowboy,’” Grimes said. “Well, of course I’m not, I’m an actor. That’s why I’m able to do this.”

He added that the expectation sometimes leaves him baffled, joking that if he were truly a cowboy, he would be “herding cattle right now” instead of acting on a television set.

Grimes has since reprised his role as Kayce Dutton in the CBS spinoff Marshals, as the franchise continues to expand beyond its original series.

Reflecting on the show’s long run, he also praised the cast for adapting through major changes behind the scenes, including the exit of lead actor Kevin Costner during the show’s fifth season.

“There was a big new challenge, but, you know, challenge accepted,” Grimes said, adding that the final season “was absolutely incredible.”

Costner, who played John Dutton, left the series in 2024, confirming he would instead focus on his Western film project Horizon: An American Saga.

Since its debut, Yellowstone has built a passionate global fanbase drawn to its modern Western themes, family drama, and ranching lifestyle—sometimes blurring the line between fiction and reality for viewers.
