Lizzo teases return to signature sound on upcoming album
The singer describes her creative process as focused on songwriting and production
Lizzo is offering fans a glimpse into what they can expect from her upcoming album, teasing a return to her signature style while hinting at fresh creative direction.
In a recent interview with People, the Truth Hurts hitmaker, born Melissa Jefferson, said her new project will stay true to her identity as an artist, while still evolving with her experiences and influences.
“I think it's always going to be the Lizzo sound,” she said, emphasizing that her music continues to reflect her unique blend of confidence, empowerment, and genre-crossing pop and hip-hop elements.
Lizzo also reflected on fan reactions to her recent previews, including a snippet of new material that sparked nostalgic comparisons online.
She said some listeners interpreted her sound as reminiscent of the 1990s, a comparison she welcomed but did not overanalyze.
“I like to let the people decide what the sound is,” she said, adding that she prefers audiences to form their own interpretations of her work rather than defining it too rigidly herself.
Discussing her creative process, Lizzo explained that she remains deeply involved in shaping her music from the ground up, focusing on songwriting, production, and crafting cohesive records.
“I love constructing and producing and creating just well-crafted music and songs,” she said, noting that attention to detail remains central to her artistic approach.
Her comments come as she continues to roll out new material, including a recently released track that samples Meredith Brooks’ 1997 hit Bitch.
The song has already drawn attention online for its bold themes and messaging.
Lizzo shared the track on Instagram alongside a message dedicated to women who are often unfairly labeled for asserting themselves.
She described the song as a celebration of boundaries, confidence, ambition, and self-expression.
