Martin Short is opening up about the personal heartbreak that shaped his life in his upcoming Marty, Life Is Short documentary, offering an emotional look at how loss and humor became intertwined throughout his journey.

The film is set to premiere on Netflix on May 12 and has been described by the streamer as a definitive portrait of the veteran comedian’s decades-long career and private struggles.

A newly released trailer shows Short reflecting on the many tragedies he has endured, including the deaths of close family members and his late wife.

Among the most painful chapters revisited is the loss of his wife, Nancy Dolman, who died of ovarian cancer in 2010 after 36 years of marriage.

The documentary also explores the death of his eldest brother in a car accident when Short was just 12, followed by the passing of both his parents before he turned 20.

The emotional special arrives with renewed poignancy as it also touches on the death of his daughter, Katherine Hartley Short, who died earlier this year at age 42.

Despite the overwhelming grief, Short explains in the trailer that comedy became his way of processing pain and remaining connected to joy.

Directed by Lawrence Kasdan, the documentary combines intimate home videos with interviews from some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including Tom Hanks, Eugene Levy, Steve Martin and the late Catherine O'Hara.

Early online reaction suggests viewers are expecting the film to be both deeply heartbreaking and warmly celebratory of Short’s enduring comic legacy.
