A child has died following a tragic playground incident at an elementary school in Massachusetts after being struck by a falling tree, officials confirmed.

The incident occurred on Monday, May 4, at Winthrop Elementary School in Melrose, where a tree unexpectedly collapsed onto a playground shortly after students were dismissed for the day. Two students and an adult were injured in the incident.

On Tuesday, May 5, Melrose Public Schools Superintendent Cari Berman and Mayor Jennifer Grigoraitis confirmed that one of the injured students had died from their injuries.

“It is with great sadness that we share that the student who was seriously injured yesterday afternoon… has died,” the officials said in a joint statement.

They added that the other injured student and adult had been discharged from hospital.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the child.

Local reports indicated that the fallen tree struck a jungle gym area, with video footage showing the structure partially covered by the large tree.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and transported the injured individuals to nearby hospitals.

Parents and residents described the moment as deeply distressing. One parent, Robin Magnuson, told local media she learned of the incident through messages from other parents and later saw emergency crews at the school.

“It’s terrifying. You hope everyone’s okay,” she said, recalling the chaos as ambulances arrived.

Another resident, Dan Finley, reflected on the tragedy, saying it was especially painful to see such an event unfold in a place meant for children’s joy.

Following the child’s death, flowers and tributes began appearing near the playground, turning the area into an informal memorial.

Officials expressed their condolences and said support services have been made available for students, families, and school staff.

“There are no words to convey such a profound loss,” Berman and Grigoraitis said, adding that their thoughts remain with the grieving family and community.

They also thanked first responders, school staff and parents who assisted during the emergency response, and urged the public to respect the family’s privacy as the community mourns.
