Houston police identify Mitchell family in suspected River Oaks murder-suicide
Thy Mitchell is remembered by friends as a devoted mother and businesswoman
The Houston community is in mourning following the identification of a family of four found dead in their River Oaks residence on Monday.
Authorities from the Houston Police Department have identified the deceased as 52-year-old Matthew Mitchell, his wife, Thy Mitchell, 39, and their two young children, Maya, 8, and Max, 4. Preliminary evidence suggests the incident was a murder-suicide in which Matthew Mitchell shot his family members before turning the weapon on himself.
The discovery was made at approximately 5:25p.m. when officers responded to a welfare check at the home in the 2100 block of Kingston Street.
Concerns were raised after a babysitter and relatives had not heard from the family since the previous evening. Upon entering the three-story townhouse, police located the four individuals unresponsive with gunshot wounds.
Thy Mitchell’s sister, Ly Mai, expressed the family’s profound grief in a social media statement on Tuesday, describing the loss as "incredibly difficult" and requesting privacy.
Matthew and Thy Mitchell were prominent figures in the Houston culinary scene, owning the popular Montrose establishments Traveler’s Table and Traveler’s Cart.
Their ventures were celebrated for bringing global flavours to the city and had been featured on various television programmes.
Publicist Brittany Meisner paid tribute to Thy, calling her a "devoted mother and businesswoman" who was always seeking her next adventure.
Despite the tragedy, Traveler’s Table reportedly remains open as the community begins to process the loss. The couple also managed a clothing line, Foreign Fare, reflecting their shared passion for international travel and culture.
