  • Netflix has commissioned a sequel mini-series titled Florida following the hit show La Palma.
  • The story follows a Norwegian community in the U.S. facing an imminent tsunami threat.
  • Director Cecilie Mosli and writer Lars Gudmestad will lead the production for Fantefilm.

Netflix has officially greenlit a mini-series sequel titled "Florida," following the international success of its Norwegian disaster drama "La Palma."

The announcement, made at a regional event in Norway on Friday, comes as "La Palma" continues to rank in the global top 10 for non-English language programming.

While the original series focused on a Norwegian family in the Canary Islands facing a volcanic eruption, the sequel will shift its geographical focus while maintaining the same high-stakes tension.

"Florida" is set to pick up just hours after the events of the first series. The narrative will follow a Norwegian community residing in the United States that remains tragically unaware that a devastating tsunami, triggered by the eruption, is racing across the Atlantic toward the Florida coast.

Lars Gudmestad returns as the lead writer, with Cecilie Mosli set to direct. The production is handled by Fantefilm, the studio behind acclaimed "Scandisaster" titles like "The Burning Sea."

Lars Gudmestad described the project as a long-held dream, stating his ambition to create a "spectacular disaster series with characters audiences can recognise themselves in."

Director Cecilie Mosli noted that the combination of large-scale catastrophe and intimate human stories is what makes this franchise so compelling.

The original cast of "La Palma" included Ólafur Darri Ólafsson and Ingrid Bolsø Berdal; however, casting details for the American-based sequel have yet to be finalised.

Production is expected to begin later this year as Netflix continues to invest heavily in its European content library.
