A close confidant of Bonnie Tyler has disclosed that the iconic singer underwent an urgent operation due to a ruptured appendix.

Algarve-based entrepreneur Liberto Mealha shared that the 74-year-old singer began experiencing severe stomach pain soon after reaching Portugal, where she has a second residence, following inconclusive medical tests in London.

Bonnie, who is the godmother to Mr. Mealha’s daughter, remained in a medically induced coma in the intensive care unit at Faro Hospital this morning.

Her representative has indicated she is in the coma “to support her recovery” with reports from leading Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha today stating she is dealing with a widespread infection being treated with strong antibiotics following her appendectomy.

Speaking on the ongoing health challenges of the Welsh star, Mr. Mealha said: “She started feeling discomfort while performing in London and sought a doctor for examinations, but nothing was detected at that time.

“She chose to go to the Algarve, where she began to suffer significant abdominal discomfort.

“After two days, she visited a private hospital, where she was urgently referred to the hospital in Faro as her appendix had ruptured, necessitating immediate surgery.”

The businessman, who got acquainted with The Total Eclipse of the Heart singer while launching a renowned Albufeira nightclub in the 1980s, told Correio da Manha that Bonnie’s devoted husband Robert Sullivan is spending all his time by her hospital side, only going home for rest at night.

He mentioned: “He’s immensely thankful to the medical team at Faro Hospital and believes that if Bonnie had remained in the UK, the outcome might have been different.”

Reports about Bonnie's health issues first came to light on Wednesday, following stories about her undergoing emergency bowel surgery.

A representative responded by saying: “We deeply regret to inform that Bonnie has been hospitalised in Faro, Portugal, where she resides, for urgent intestinal surgery.

“The procedure was successful, and she is now in recovery.

“We recognise that her family, friends, and fans might be concerned and we all wish her a speedy and complete recovery.”

Amidst new reports yesterday about her worsening health, the representative noted: “Bonnie has been placed in a medically induced coma by her doctors to facilitate her recovery.

“We kindly ask for privacy during this challenging period, knowing that everyone is hoping for her well-being.

“Further updates will be provided when possible.”

Bonnie, famed for numerous Top Ten hits throughout her career and representing the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, was reportedly taken to the hospital on April 30.

She was reported to be “stable” in a mid-level care unit at Faro Hospital until a decline in her condition led to her transfer to intensive care.

Sources indicated that she continued with her professional obligations leading up to her hospital admission despite suffering from persistent pain for several weeks.

One supporter commented on social media: “Eight years ago, my husband spent ten days in an induced coma in the ICU at Faro Hospital.

“They took great care of him. I hope Bonnie receives the same attention.”

Another added: “Hang in there, Bonnie, we Welsh folks don't give up easily. Wishing you a full recovery.”

A third individual remarked: “Wishing Bonnie a speedy recovery.

“She is such a wonderful person. I used to live near her in Albufeira and often saw her at the hair salon doing her tan, then driving off in her little red convertible.”

A ruptured appendix represents a critical medical emergency needing prompt surgical treatment and antibiotics to prevent life-threatening infections.

An infected appendix that bursts creates a gap, allowing fecal material and bacteria to leak into the abdominal area.
