Brooke Shields reflects on aging and says women over 40 are overlooked
The actress said women over 40 still have 'so much more to offer'
Brooke Shields has embraced aging with confidence and said she feels “sexier” now than she did during her younger years.
The 60-year-old actress made the candid remarks during an appearance on Netflix podcast I Changed My Mind with Dan Souza, where she reflected on beauty standards, self-worth, and the inspiration behind her haircare brand Commence.
Speaking about entering a new stage in life, Shields explained that the idea for her brand was shaped by her own experience of aging and the way society often views women over 40.
“It stemmed from being the age that I am and realizing that I was coming into this very important phase, but that I wasn't being told that I had the same amount of value as I was told when my ovaries worked,” she shared.
The actress went on to say that she now feels more confident and fulfilled than she did in her younger years.
“I feel sexier now than I did in my teens and I feel that I have so much more to offer,” Shields added.
The Blue Lagoon star also questioned why women are often made to feel invisible as they age, especially within beauty and entertainment industries.
“Why aren't women being allowed to be their full selves?” she asked during the discussion.
Shields explained that the response to Commence has been overwhelming, with many women turning to the brand not only for haircare solutions but also for a sense of community and representation.
According to the actress, women frequently shared concerns about hair changes, scalp health and confidence as they grew older.
When the brand launched in 2024, Shields said she wanted it to help redefine the conversation around menopause and aging.
“There should be a lightness in this era of a woman's life,” she previously said, adding that women should feel excited rather than dismissed during that chapter.
The actress has continued to speak openly about aging in recent years, previously describing growing older as “liberating” while encouraging women over 40 to embrace their value and independence.
Shields also stressed that women should stop feeling pressured to make themselves “smaller” with age and instead recognize their strength, experience and influence.
