Billy Bob Thornton shares why he prefers 'human experience' over political views
The actor discussed celebrity influence during a podcast appearance with Howie Mandel
Billy Bob Thornton has explained why he steers clear of political commentary, saying he does not consider himself knowledgeable enough to weigh in publicly on the subject.
Speaking on the May 5 episode of Howie Mandel’s podcast Howie Mandel Does Stuff, the Landman actor joined a broader discussion about celebrities using their platforms to discuss politics.
Thornton, 70, said he believes public figures should focus on shared human experiences rather than political influence.
“What we are experts in, just like the person that’s listening, is being human,” he said. “That, I think, to me, is way more important than an actor or actress or musician telling people who to vote for.”
Thornton also admitted he avoids speaking on politics because he feels unqualified to do so.
“I don’t know anything about politics,” he said. “I have no idea. And the stuff that I believe about it, I don’t want to force it down somebody else’s throat because I’m not an expert on that.”
Mandel agreed during the conversation, noting that celebrities can have a greater impact by sharing personal experiences rather than political opinions.
Elsewhere in the podcast, Thornton discussed his health and strict dietary restrictions, revealing he avoids wheat, dairy, and certain meats due to multiple allergies and a rare blood type.
“I have a lot of allergies,” he said. “I just assumed everybody felt like s--- after they ate. I didn’t know.”
