Kellie Pickler has spoken publicly for the first time in three years, reflecting on her return to American Idol and describing her life as “very blessed” following the death of her husband.

The country singer, 39, made a rare public appearance during the American Idol Season 20 reunion special on May 4, marking 20 years since her breakout run on the show. She later appeared on the series’ official companion podcast, where she opened up about her emotional return.

“It’s just like come full circle, I guess,” Pickler said. “It is an Idol family… and once you’re a part of it, it’s forever no matter what season you’re on.”

Pickler also reflected on her journey from small-town beginnings to national fame, recalling her first time flying to Hollywood and experiencing sudden stardom at a young age.

“I think just coming from such a small town… that was my first time getting on an airplane,” she said. “It’s wild to think, wow, 20 years have passed and a lot’s happened, and I’m very blessed. I’m very blessed.”

Her husband, songwriter Kyle Jacobs, died in February 2023 at the age of 49. Following his death, Pickler stepped away from the spotlight for a period before gradually returning to select public appearances.

She made one of her first returns to the stage in April 2024 during a Patsy Cline tribute concert at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.

During the American Idol reunion episode, Pickler performed Martina McBride’s “A Broken Wing” alongside contestant Hannah Harper, earning praise from judge Lionel Richie, who called their vocals a “perfect blend.”

Pickler originally competed on American Idol Season 5, finishing in sixth place, before going on to build a successful career in country music and television.
