Riley Green reveals family story behind his unusual name change
The singer is also set to appear on The Voice as a coach in the upcoming season
Riley Green has revealed the touching family story behind why he goes by his middle name, explaining that his birth name, Johnathan, is rarely used in his personal life.
Speaking on Katie & Company in an interview aired Tuesday, June 2, the “Worst Way” singer said he has effectively gone by “Riley” for as long as he can remember.
“Nobody’s ever called me Johnathan,” Green, 37, said, noting that even his closest circles do not use his first name.
Green explained that his middle name carries a family connection that dates back generations, tracing its origin to his great-grandfather.
“I know that I got the name Riley because my great-granddaddy, Paul, who I didn’t know, got a little dementia, and he started calling my dad Riley,” he said. “My dad’s name is Kevon.”
According to Green, the unexpected family moment ultimately inspired his parents to name him Riley — a decision that stuck as both his personal and professional identity.
“I don’t even think I would turn if I heard [someone call me Johnathan],” he added.
The country star is currently preparing for a busy year ahead, with his fourth studio album That’s Just Me scheduled for release on September 18.
He recently released the single “Think as You Drunk” and is also set to expand his career into television, including a coaching role on The Voice Season 30 and an appearance in the CBS series Marshals.
Green has previously spoken about the challenges of fame, including balancing a packed touring schedule with public attention, saying he sometimes finds it difficult to enjoy everyday outings without drawing crowds.
Despite the pressures of his rising profile, Green’s latest comments highlight the personal history behind the name fans have come to know him by.
