Melissa Etheridge shares how she continues life after tragic loss of son
The artist says she finds strength in choosing to keep moving forward despite her loss
Melissa Etheridge is reflecting on how she continues to navigate life after the devastating loss of her son, Beckett Cypher, who died in 2020 at the age of 21 following complications linked to opioid addiction.
The 65-year-old singer, who shares Beckett with ex-partner Julie Cypher, said she has learned to cope with grief by intentionally finding ways to keep moving forward during moments that once centered around her son’s daily presence.
Speaking to Us Weekly, Melissa Etheridge said the early stages of her grief were especially difficult as she adjusted to the absence of their regular communication.
“It took a while,” she said. “I just sat down and just really let it happen. It’s like, ‘OK, how do I want to? Well, since I can’t call you anymore.’”
Etheridge described how she and her son used to speak or text every day, making the silence after his passing particularly painful.
“That’s when I feel it the most,” she said. “So I decided, since I can’t call you anymore, I’m going to go garden. I’m going to take a drive. I’m going to do these things. I’m going to keep living.”
Beckett’s death in 2020 marked a tragic loss for the Grammy-winning artist, who has since spoken openly about grief, addiction, and the importance of support for families facing similar struggles.
In earlier interviews, Etheridge has encouraged parents coping with addiction-related loss to understand that guilt and shame can be overwhelming but should not define their lives. She has also emphasized that addiction can affect any family, regardless of background.
Despite her grief, Etheridge has said she maintains a belief that she will one day be reunited with her son, describing a spiritual connection that continues to give her comfort.
“I believe that there’s a spirit that we all are that we’re all connected to,” she previously said. “I will see him again, and Beckett wants me to be happy.”
The Come to My Window singer has also explored her experience in her memoir Talking to My Angels, which addresses Beckett’s struggles with addiction and her journey through loss.
She explained that writing the book allowed her to confront difficult truths and share how she has worked through grief over time.
“He died in 2020 at the beginning of COVID,” she said. “I knew that as time went on, I would need to answer the questions.”
