Windows can do much more than bring in sunlight and ventilation. Interior design expert Arth Kumar says thoughtful window designs can transform a room, making it feel brighter, larger and more visually appealing.

Speaking to HT Lifestyle, Kumar explained that windows play a key role in shaping a home's atmosphere by connecting indoor spaces with the outdoors while complementing walls, flooring and furniture.

"Windows let in sunlight, make our homes feel brighter and connect us to the outside world," Kumar said. "They are a vital design element as windows dictate the atmosphere of a room and seamlessly tie together your walls, floors and furniture."

Choose Window Designs That Make a Statement

The design of a window can influence everything from natural lighting to the overall architectural style of a home.

Kumar recommends arched windows for homeowners looking to create a striking focal point, particularly in dining rooms or bedrooms overlooking gardens or balconies. Slimline windows, meanwhile, feature ultra-thin frames that maximise natural light and provide unobstructed views.

"If a slimline window is installed anywhere in the house, it will give the space a much more modern look and will make the space look wider as well," he said.

Bay windows are another popular option, creating additional space that can be transformed into reading nooks, breakfast corners or display areas for indoor plants.

Experiment With Different Types of Window Glass

Glass selection can significantly affect privacy, light levels and aesthetics.

Tinted glass can soften harsh sunlight while still allowing natural light to enter, making it particularly useful during warmer months. Frosted or fluted glass offers privacy without blocking daylight and works well in bathrooms and kitchens.

For homes with attractive outdoor views, Kumar recommends clear glass to keep attention focused on the scenery outside.

Use Custom Window Trims for Extra Style

Window trims can elevate a room's design by creating visual contrast and tying together other finishes in the space.

Kumar suggests coordinating trim colours with existing design elements such as black, white or matt-gold accents. Homeowners can also use contrasting paint colours around window frames to create a feature that draws the eye.

Layer Curtains and Blinds for a Designer Look

Combining curtains with blinds or roller shades adds texture and flexibility while helping control light and privacy.

Kumar recommends mounting curtains from the ceiling and extending them beyond the window frame to create the illusion of taller ceilings and larger windows.

"If your curtains are hung directly from the ceiling and the width when opened goes on the side, it makes your window look much more appealing," he said.

Create a Cosy Window Seat

A well-designed window seat can turn an unused area into one of the most inviting spots in the home.

Kumar suggests installing a custom bench with cushions and throw pillows beneath a bay or picture window. Adding floating shelves nearby can further enhance the space, creating a comfortable reading or relaxation corner.

To maximise functionality, he recommends incorporating hidden storage beneath the seating area for blankets, cushions and other household items.
