Persistent breathlessness and tiredness during routine physical activity may indicate aortic valve stenosis rather than normal ageing. In a social media video published on Instagram on July 20, Max Super Speciality Hospital Saket Chairman of Cardiology Dr Viveka Kumar explained that individuals frequently mistake exercise-induced fatigue for growing older. However, he warned that these recurring physical signals often point to underlying cardiovascular issues that require immediate attention.

According to Dr Kumar, aortic valve stenosis occurs when the main valve of the heart narrows significantly. This structural narrowing restricts blood flow, forcing the cardiac muscle to work much harder to pump oxygenated blood across the body. He stressed that individuals experiencing these signs must undergo a timely, comprehensive cardiac evaluation rather than dismissing them.

Alongside shortness of breath and rapid fatigue while walking, Dr Kumar highlighted several key warning indicators associated with the condition:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest heaviness
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting

To address the condition, Dr Kumar suggested a minimally invasive procedure known as transcatheter aortic valve implantation for select patients diagnosed with the disorder. Unlike traditional surgical methods, this targeted intervention repairs the affected area without requiring open-chest surgery.

The cardiologist emphasised that medical professionals only determine the appropriate course of treatment following a thorough heart evaluation. He urged individuals to seek prompt medical advice if symptoms persist, noting that early diagnosis remains vital to protect long-term heart health.
