'X-Men' reboot script written by 'Beef' creator and 'The Bear' showrunner
Jake Schreier is leading the X-Men film reboot
Jake Schreier is involved in the X-Men film reboot and has mentioned that Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear showrunner Joanna Calo are developing the script for the Marvel film.
In a recent discussion, the Thunderboltsdirector noted that the X-Men project remains in the "development" phase, sharing with Collider that Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo "have started working on a draft now, which is quite exciting to bring that team back together."
Schreier collaborated with Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo on Beef, and they both contributed to Thunderbolts*.
The X-Men reboot offers an opportunity for the trio to work together again on another Marvel film, anticipated to be released after Avengers: Secret Wars.
The director praised Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo as creators of "two of the most compelling shows on TV right now," saying, "When you revisit X-Men [comics], there’s a blend of ideology and interpersonal drama, almost akin to a soap opera. Having writers who can derive ideology from personal stakes is essential, and if we nail that, it will remain true to the essence of X-Men.”
Avengers: Doomsday will bring the X-Men heroes together for the debut time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Following Disney's 2019 acquisition of 21st Century Fox, all characters are now under the Disney banner.
This includes Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier / Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), and James Marsden (Cyclops).
During a 2025 discussion, Schreier reflected on his experiences with Thunderbolts* and how it would influence his approach to creating the X-Men movie.
“The biggest lesson for me was balancing the action with the more emotional, character-driven moments. Despite more shooting days than I’ve ever had, it gets quickly consumed by action sequences,” he explained to Empire.
