'The Big Bang Theory' spinoff taps Danny Elfman for original theme song
Several original cast members will reprise their roles in the new spinoff
Danny Elfman has officially joined the expanding Big Bang Theory universe, confirming he will compose the theme music for the upcoming HBO Max spinoff Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.
The announcement was made during CCXP Mexico City on Sunday, April 26, with Warner Bros. Discovery also confirming that the acclaimed composer will create the series’ original opening theme.
Elfman is widely known for his long-running collaborations with director Tim Burton on films including Batman, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride.
The new series, set to premiere in July 2026, centers on comic book store owner Stuart Bloom, who accidentally triggers a multiverse crisis after breaking a device created by Sheldon and Leonard.
According to the official synopsis, Stuart is forced into an unlikely mission to restore reality, joined by his girlfriend Denise, friend Bert the geologist, and quantum physicist Barry Kripke.
Along the way, the group encounters alternate-universe versions of familiar characters from The Big Bang Theory, with the story teasing unpredictable outcomes.
Returning cast members include Kevin Sussman as Stuart, Lauren Lapkus as Denise, Brian Posehn as Bert, and John Ross Bowie as Barry Kripke.
While speculation continues over potential appearances from original stars such as Jim Parsons and Johnny Galecki, series creator Chuck Lorre has remained deliberately vague.
When asked whether the core cast might return, Lorre declined to confirm details, joking that he had taken a “blood oath” of secrecy.
Pressed further on the possibility of alternate versions of familiar characters, Lorre only added teasingly: “You’re gonna love this show.”
