Rebel Wilson labelled 'fantastical liar' during closing arguments of defamation trial
  • Rebel Wilson was called a fantastical liar during the trial's closing arguments.
  • Charlotte MacInnes claims the director's social media posts damaged her professional reputation.
  • The judge is now considering the verdict following the intense legal proceedings.

Hollywood actor Rebel Wilson has been described as a "fantastical liar" during the final statements of a high-stakes defamation trial in Sydney, Australia.

The "Pitch Perfect" star is being sued by Charlotte MacInnes, the lead actress of Ms Wilson's directorial debut, "The Deb."

The legal dispute centres on social media posts where Ms Wilson alleged that Ms MacInnes had made a sexual harassment complaint against producer Amanda Ghost, only to later retract it for the benefit of her career.

In the Federal Court on Friday, Ms MacInnes’ barrister, Sue Chrysanthou, accused Ms Wilson of a "complete revision of history."

Ms Chrysanthou argued that the director invented terrible allegations to protect her own interests during production disputes.

The court heard that the environment in question—where Ms MacInnes and Ms Ghost shared a bath in swimwear following a medical episode—was "hardly a sexy environment" for harassment.

Furthermore, Ms Chrysanthou stated that Ms MacInnes has been unable to eat or sleep and lives in fear of what Ms Wilson might do next.

Conversely, Ms Wilson’s barrister, Dauid Sibtain, told the court that the notion his client would fabricate such an allegation was "preposterous" and would have been "catastrophic" for her own film.

He suggested that Ms MacInnes’ motivation for walking back the alleged complaint was evidenced by her career going "stratospheric," including a recording contract with Warner Music.

Justice Elizabeth Raper has now retired to consider her verdict, marking the conclusion of a fiery battle that has seen accusations of "smear websites" and missing mobile phone data.
