The Christopher Nolan’s historical epic Oppenheimer turned out a box office hit as it has become the highest-grossing R-rated film of the year - making $552.9 million worldwide since its release in theatres on July 21, 2023.

According to Universal Pictures’ official estimation, the Cillian Murphy-led film has been “marked the fastest a Universal R-rated film has hit the $200 million threshold domestically.”

The studio also confirmed that the film become the highest grossing movie set during World War II. The film is one of only four biopics to earn more than half a billion dollars worldwide, alongside 2018 release Bohemian Rhapsody, The Passion of the Christ (2004) and American Sniper (2014).

Oppenheimer – based on biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, chronicles the life and career of American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who is also known as the ‘Father of Atomic Bomb’ and the Manhattan Project.

The historical epic became the highest-grossing R-rated film of the year ahead of 2023 release John Wick: Chapter 4 and also surpassed the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

The senior media analyst at Comscore, Paul Dergarabedian, credited Oppenheimer for its 'astounding theatrical run made all the more impressive by the R-rating, running time and subject matter.'

He also credited Christopher Nolan as the director, saying, “In the hands of a lesser filmmaker and absent a spectacular marketing and release strategy, [the film] would have likely wound up as a mere footnote when referencing the performance of historical dramas at the box office.”

According to Box Office Mojo, Oppenheimer has overtaken Dunkirk (2017), Saving Private Ryan (1998), and Pearl Harbor (2001) in becoming the highest grossing WWII film.

Oppenheimer is currently running in theatres worldwide.
