Soccer legend Sir Bobby Charlton, who played an instrumental role in England's historic 1966 World Cup victory has passed away at the age of 86. 

The former Manchester United and England star, had been diagnosed with dementia in 2020. 

His family confirmed his peaceful passing and expressed their gratitude for the support and love he received from the football community and beyond.

Charlton's illustrious career was marked by numerous achievements, including earning 106 caps for the England national team and scoring 49 international goals, both of which were records for his country at the time. 

During his 17-year career with Manchester United, he became a key figure in the club's successes, winning three league titles, a European Cup, and an FA Cup.

Manchester United paid a heartfelt tribute to their legendary player, describing him as "Words will never be enough." 


Charlton's impact on and off the field made him a true giant of the game. He played 758 games for Manchester United, scoring 249 goals. 

After retiring as a player, he continued to be involved with the club, serving as a director.

The Football Association, England manager Gareth Southgate, and former England captain David Beckham expressed their condolences and admiration for Charlton's contributions to the sport.
