Shakira has opened up about her sons’ reaction to the Barbie film, expressing their discomfort because they perceived it as emasculating theme.
While conversing with the Allure magazine for a cover interview, the Waka Waka songstress was questioned to share her thoughts on Greta Gerwig-directed blockbuster that topped 2023.
Shakira shared that her sons Sasha, nine, and Mila, 11, share with her ex-boyfriend Gerard Pique, “absolutely hated it,” adding, “They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent. I’m raising two boys. I want ’em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women.”
She affirmed her sons' perspective, emphasizing her preference, “I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide. I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity.”

The Hips Don’t Lie singer, added, “I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well.”
“We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost,” Shakira shared.
The interviewer asked, “Just because a woman can do it all doesn’t mean she should?”
“Why not share the load with people who deserve to carry it, who have a duty to carry it as well?” Shakira answered.
However, on the professional front, Shakira has released her new album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, after seven years of hiatus.
