Prince William and Princess Kate break formality with sweet gesture at Trump state dinner

Royal banquets are usually known for their formality, traditions, and carefully composed elegance.

During the state banquet with President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, Prince William and Princess Kate offered a glimpse of informality that caught everyone’s attention.

Here are the top highlights from the Windsor Castle on Wednesday, Sept. 17:

1. A Rare Display of Affection

Behind the scenes, William and Kate shared a photo of themselves holding hands. This is a strikingly rare public display of affection for the royal couple.

The picture, posted on their Instagram Stories, carried the caption “behind the scenes.”

2. Kate’s Show-Stopping Ensemble

Princess Kate stunned in a cream and gold lace gown designed by Phillipa Lepley. Adding to the regal aura, she wore the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara, once a favourite of Princess Diana along with earrings that belonged to Queen Elizabeth II.

She also carried the Royal Family Orders of King Charles III and Queen Elizabeth II, as well as the Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order star and sash.

3. William’s Classic Look

The Prince of Wales matched Kate’s elegance in a timeless black suit. It was adorned with his military honours, reminding observers of the importance and tradition the event represented.

4. The Grand Procession

The banquet began with a carefully staged procession. King Charles walked with Trump, followed by Queen Camilla with Melania.

Prince William was paired with Paula Reynolds, Chair of the National Grid, while Kate walked alongside Michael Boulos, husband of Tiffany Trump. Tiffany herself followed later in the team with Apple CEO Tim Cook.

5. A Star-Studded Guest List

With 160 honoured guests, the dinner seating echoed both diplomacy and symbolism. Kate sat beside Michael Boulos, while Tiffany Trump was positioned four seats down, settled between Cook and David Owen, husband of biotech CEO Dame Emma Walmsley.

6. Trump’s Compliment to Kate

During his speech, President Trump singled out Princess Kate with glowing praise. Turning toward her, he said, “Melania and I are delighted to visit with Prince William and to see Her Royal Highness, Princess Catherine. So radiant, so healthy and so beautiful.”

Kate responded with her signature grace, smiling warmly at the president. Trump then added, “It’s really a great honour. Thank you.”
