Prince Harry among distinguished company: Royal spares across the globe

Prince Harry have made a living out of being the most famous royal spare in existence — though the competition is tough, and involves far less drama.

While Harry, Duke of Sussex has risen in status as a royal spare due to his apparent separation from the British Crown after initially breaking onto the scene as a young party animal, the 41-year-old prince is yet a part of an impressive lineup of spares from across the various monarchies of the world.

Meet some of them right here:

Princess Charlotte

Prince Harry’s own niece and the only daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Princess Charlotte is a spare to her elder brother, Prince George.

Notably, the 10-year-old royal is the first female spare in her lineage to become a part of the royal line of succession after three centuries, according to a law passed in 2013. Before that, girls and women could not inherit the British throne.

Princess Sofia

Princess Sofia of Spain is a spare to her elder sister, Princess Leonor, with her official title stylised as Infanta Sofía.

Pursuing an International Baccalaureate at the UWC Atlantic College in Wales since 2023, the Spanish spare is often seen accompanying her sister and parents, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, during different events.

Princess Isabella

Isabella of Denmark is the royal spare to her elder brother, Prince Christian, next in line to inherit the Danish throne.

The Princess turned 18 years old in April earlier this year and is often remembered for a minor public spat with her mother, Queen Mary, in 2021 — Isabella was overheard chastising the Queen during a photo-op at her brother’s confirmation at church.

Prince Seeiso

Prince Seeiso of Lesotho is a spare to his elder brother, King Letsie III, and a close confidante of Prince Harry.

The 59-year-old African prince had co-founded Sentebale alongside the Duke in 2006 — the charity which has become the centre of much controversy ever since its founders and board’s resignation in March this year due to internal allegations of bullying and harassment.

Prince Gabriel

Unlike other male spares, Prince Gabriel is one of the few to inherit the status as a spare to his elder sister, Princess Elisabeth of Belgium.

The 22-year-old royal often makes lists about the world’s most eligible bachelors and is currently studying at the Royal Military Academy, where he took the oath as an officer in the presence of his parents, King Phillipe and Queen Mathilde, and younger sister, Princess Eléonore, in September.
