Ethan Hawke gets honest about Maya Hawke’s difficult childhood
American actor and movie-maker expresses regrets over his daughter’s ‘hard’ upbringing
Ethan Hawke recently made honest admission about his daughter Maya Hawke’s complicated childhood.
Before Sunrise star talked about the challenges that Maya faced in her early life during Variety and CNN’s Actors on Actors interview along with Sydney Sweeney.
“There were a lot of things about her childhood that were really, really hard and complicated, and things I regret for her,” confessed the 55-year-old, who shares daughter Maya and son Levon with ex-wife Uma Thurman.
It is worth noting that the Dead Poet’s Society actor didn’t divulge further details about those complications.
However, Ethan revealed that he knew Maya would be an artist when she was just four-year-old.
“I knew that she was gonna be a very good one. That was her safe place, water-colouring, dancing, singing all throughout her childhood,” explained the Training Day actor.
Moreover, Ethan recalled some teacher who said, “‘Maya, are you happy?’ Cause they were worried about her. And she said something to the effect of, ‘Do you really think that's the question?’ I thought, ‘I love this kid.’”
Meanwhile the Sinister actor mentioned that Maya was just 13 at the time.
Ethan pointed out that his daughter said to her teacher, “I don't think that's a very interesting question. I think there's a lot more interesting questions than whether I’m happy or not… ‘Am I happy? No. But I don't aspire to be happy.’”
So, the actor opened up that he was never worried about Maya going into the arts.
“I knew that was gonna save her life,” concluded Ethan.
