Timothée Chalamet defends his ‘top-level’ commitment to ‘Marty Supreme’
Timothée Chalamet doesn’t want people to take his work ‘for granted’
Timothée Chalamet is reiterating his confidence in his new film and performance after he was recently branded by social media as coming off increasingly conceited.
During his December 16 appearance on Good Morning America, the Marty Supreme star said, “I want the movie to succeed. I want everything to win. The real truth is that ‘Marty Supreme,’ I feel confident to the degree that by next summer… I’m confident I know what it’s gonna be by next summer.”
When the clip got posted to the Reddit thread Fauxmoi, some of the users expressly rebuked Chalamet’s tone.
“He’s truly unbearable and fans are trying to defend this saying it’s him doing the interview in character as if that doesn’t make him even more unbearable lol,” wrote one user.
While another pointed out, “Someone said we made fun of Bradley Cooper for way less and they’re correct. This is overkill beyond.”
Some of the netizens also narrowed in on the 29-year-old actor’s apparent desire to win an Academy Award, with one of them claiming, “You don’t win Oscars by saying it outloud, Timothée!” (Sic)
When journalist Anne Thompson interviewed the young star for IndieWire on December 19, the day his film opened in limited cinemas, she asked him about his recent comments.
To which he responded, “This is in the spirit of Marty, and I feel like this is ultimately an original film at a time when original movies aren’t really put out.”
He further addressed his eccentric new marketing scheme for the upcoming movie, saying, “Whether it’s the merch or the Zoom or the media appearances, I’m trying to get this out in the biggest way possible. In the spirit of Marty Mauser.”
Marty Supreme has already become this year’s biggest opening for a limited and independent release, with $875,000 grossed from venues in only New York and Los Angeles, while the film will open nationwide on December 25.
