Ann Godoff, the visionary founder, president, and Editor-in-Chief of Penguin Press, who nurtured the talents of authors such as E.L. Doctorow, Henry Louis Gates Jr., Michael Pollan, Tom Brokaw, Salman Rushdie, Zadie Smith, William Styron, and Alice Waters, has passed away in Albany, NY, this Tuesday. She was 76 years old.

Born on July 22, 1949, in Manhattan, Godoff established The Penguin Press in 2003 with a commitment “to publishing superior nonfiction and literary fiction … aiming to present ideas of significance, stories with enduring appeal, and books that not only spark conversations but ignite them.”

The influence of Penguin Press on literature and beyond is undeniable.

Currently, Thomas Pynchon calls it his literary home, with his upcoming novel, Shadow Ticket, set for publication in October. Pynchon’s work Vineland inspired the acclaimed movie One Battle After Another.

In addition to her notable work with authors such as Mary Oliver, Werner Herzog, Gavin Newsom, Aziz Ansari, David Axelrod, Chuck Klosterman, Phil Jackson, Karl Ove Knausgaard, Al Gore, Carolyn Forche, and Errol Morris.

Throughout her career, Godoff embraced multiple roles, managing duties from both the business and creative realms of publishing—often at the same time.

She remarked to C-SPAN2 in 2002, “The Editor-in-Chief position feels like home because it involves nurturing editorial talent. I genuinely cherish the role of an editor.”

Her expertise was well acknowledged by her colleagues.

“Ann set an example for generations of editors and publishers, proving that one can champion culturally significant works and still enjoy commercial success,” said Jonathan Karp, a former Editor-in-Chief at Random House and past President and CEO of Simon & Schuster, as quoted in the New York Times.

“Were there a Hall of Fame for book publishers, Ann would be an immediate inductee.”

Ann Godoff began her publishing journey with the editorial team at Simon & Schuster in 1980 and rose to the role of Senior Editor at Atlantic Monthly Press by 1987, achieving the role of Editor-in-Chief in just two years.

In 1991, she became Executive Editor at Random House, where she was later promoted to Vice President and Editorial Director.

By 1997, she held the positions of President, Publisher, and Editor-in-Chief at the Random House Trade Publishing Group, and also served as Executive Vice President of Random House, Inc.
