A key character's demise in “Bridgerton” Season 4 is shaping the narrative for the upcoming season of this popular Netflix show.

By the conclusion of the sixth episode, Francesca Bridgerton’s (Hannah Dodd) spouse, John Stirling (Victor Alli), mentions he plans to rest.

When she inquires about his health, he reassures her it’s just “a slight headache” and requests to be awakened later.

Francesca cries out in shock upon finding him lifeless, and his visiting cousin, Michaela (Masali Baduza), hurries over to assist.

Each instalment of Shonda Rhimes’ romantic series centers on a different Bridgerton family member's pursuit of love in Regency-era England.

Although it’s not been disclosed who will take the lead in “Bridgerton’s” fifth season, John’s passing — crucial in the novels — hints that Francesca could be the focus.

Season 4 narrates the Cinderella-like romance of the maid Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha) and Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson).

However, the storyline includes a diversion into Francesca’s sorrow, featuring her husband’s memorial service.

This season introduces the first significant on-screen death in “Bridgerton.” The family's patriarch passed away before the series’ timeline, though a flashback is seen in Season 2.

Post John's demise, there's widespread concern for Francesca, who becomes frantically engrossed in hosting duties, fretting over inconsequential details like the menu.

During the service, Benedict articulates, “What makes this loss so unbearable is not just the shock, but recognising he was a remarkable man, one of our finest. His deep commitment to his family, his Parliamentary duties, and most of all, to my sister, Francesca, was unwavering.”

Sophie builds a connection with her future sister-in-law over their shared loss, reminiscing about her father’s death and advising Francesca, “The best we can do is cherish the memories of our lost loved ones and let them thrive within us.”

"Bridgerton" Season 4, Part 2, is now streaming on Netflix.
