Kevin Spacey’s disputed 'House Of Cards' departure hits MRC in $100m insurance trial
Media Rights Capital suffered setback in costly insurance battle concerning end of Netflix's 'House of Cards'
Media Rights Capital’s defeat in a costly insurance dispute regarding the end of Netflix’s House of Cards was like a twist straight from Frank Underwood’s strategies.
Transitioning from a legal battle with Kevin Spacey, the production company started by Modi Wiczyk and Asif Satchu redirected its efforts some years ago towards insurer Fireman’s Fund, aiming to recover over $100 million that MRC claims it lost from the abrupt finale and Spacey-free last season of HoC in 2018.
If the frequently accused Spacey was indeed unwell (in this case due to a sexual compulsive disorder, commonly known as sex addiction), the court was expected to rule that the insurance would cover HoC’s financial losses, thus balancing the books once again.
With leading attorneys like Michael Kump spearheading the effort, MRC assembled experts, medical assessments, and more to fortify their case.
They secured a 2024 agreement with Spacey to slash a $31 million judgment against the financially struggling Oscar winner to $1 million, seemingly enlisting their former star to their side.
Nonetheless, with a jury delivering a decisive win for Fireman’s Fund over MRC after a trial extending beyond a month, it became clear that it was once again all about Kevin Spacey.
Alternatively, if MRC believed it had a secure deal with Spacey, they might need to reconsider.
If they assumed Spacey would support their explanation for HoC’s declining sixth season due to his absence, aiding an insurance payout, Spacey seemed to have different intentions or at least alternative perspectives he wished to present to the court.
In testimony in Santa Monica this month, which highlighted the actor’s still unmistakable skill, HoC’s former POTUS Spacey maneuvered deftly through a vivid narrative involving those sex addiction allegations, public scandals, private betrayals, and even a cold email or two from a pragmatic Ted Sarandos.
Rather than supporting MRC’s claim that sex addiction caused his absence from the acclaimed political thriller—a pivotal gem in the streamer’s rising collection for many years—Spacey downplayed and derided medical reports, asserting instead that he was the one left sidelined.
